Race Report 13 - Sunday October 11

ACYC Race 13 October 11, 2009 Shifting and differing wind strengths called for a test of both fun and patience in Race 13 of the Raymarine ACYC series. Six boats braced the Sunday race, which set sail on a modified Course 7 that skipped the mosque buoy yet led them around Koh Lon and Koh Aeo to finish a shortened journey minus the toppings of the usual sausages dictated by the course.

Starts and firsts off the line do often determine the outcome and cement a race safari! A clean 12:00 start by Race Official Philomena on the lookout at the start
Kathy and her 'lovely assistant'
'Blue Jay' Jay saw Charro first off the line on the favoured starboard tack well ahead of the remaining five in the fleet and importantly, take the lead in her class of four. With nourishing grain-enriched, ice cold beverages in hand, would Charro be able to maintain her lead?

Stealth tactics and maneuvers and conducive apparent winds dicate a definitive outcome. Despite the second-placed start, the well-honed Frog took the lead shortly after the start from the pin side to clear Koh Lon and go for a deep course to round the outer island and take line honours with a time that was 59 minutes faster than Multihull second place finisher Da Vinci Niña. Philomena, in her second race of the season, garnered a fourth place for the day. And for the Charro troops? First off the line meant first in the bar and a happy finish for her ever thirsty troops on the playing field.

Accolades to the lone class members in Racing and Cruising! The southerly winds from the start saw them both hug the path close to Koh Lon with Windstar choosing to following the route wing-on-wing and Awatea with spinnaker up. Cool and clever tactics saw a fine and well-plotted course by Windstar that led her in a battle in the latter stages of the race with Da Vinci Niña to the finish in winds of up to 15 knots while Awatea cruised in on her own, also completing a well-sailed race.

A great day for all and a thrill to be out!
