Race 2 March 22 2009

ACYC Race 2 March 22 2009Milder winds prompted no thrills or spills in Race 2 of the 2009 ACYC race series - a day which fortunately involved no domestics including those of laundering and drip drying of clothes in the attempts to right what went wrong in last week's race. These were conditions which made for greater relaxation and less risk taking for the 10 participants.

Three classes sailed Course 3, a convoluted route around the Baan Nit Channel Marker and a yellow buoy positioned off the mosque interspersed with a starboard rounding of a Port Channel Marker and a port rounding of a Starboard Channel Marker.

At the start, Windstar led the fleet across the line thanks partly to a courteous Awatea, who chose not to push them up. Behind this pair, Minx and Katsu held their own duel in the race to the start line. The three Fireflys, enjoying a later start and sailing their own windward/leeward courses around the Baan Nit safe water mark and the Mosque buoy, had two races to make up for the lost race the previous week as a result of the Windstar trailing after the start
assistance rendered to their distressed relative.

Needless to say, the variety in the courses and the shifting wind provided various points and configurations of sail for all with admirable competition in some classes.

Windstar, dressed smartly in all her new finery won on corrected time in a closely contested Racing class. Perhaps a tactical move to follow the wily fox aboard Emerald Blue closer into Koh Lon to take advantage of the wind shifts had these two boats out-manoeuvering Minx and Katsu, both of whom had sailed into a hole, and overtaking the latter. Sailing alone in Cruising, Awatea with owner Andrew de Bruin at the helm assisted by all the kids - short and tall - on board, earned top honours. In Multihulls, Matt McGrath's Typhoon outshone Mumbo Jumbo with John and Clive aboard. Winners of all classes savoured the much 'coveted' wines – mangosteen, raspberry and the like – as their reward while the other podium places earned T-shirts.

And relief for the Fireflys this week! The three Phuket born and raised cats competed with less fear of unwanted natural phenomena in the tamer conditions. One member of the foundered crew sailed 'low profile' on a monohull. Where were the other drowned rats? Tails caught between their legs? With the benign conditions of Sunday's race, Twin Sharks showed the whites of her teeth not only winning the Firefly races overall, but in the first race rounded the Baan Nit Safe Water Mark ahead of the other classes despite a start five minutes later. She took overall honours for the day with a first and a second. A change of helm for the second race on The Frog despite being OCS along with Moto Inzi saw a win for them to give them second overall.

A good day had by all!
