ACYC Club Sailing
Race 10 August 30 2009

ACYC Race 10 August 30, 2009 Heavy rains and flooding last week broke to sunny skies and windy conditions for Race 10 of the Raymarine ACYC Race Series with the day providing an invigorating sail with winds gusting over 15 knots. For the three boats in Racing, it was a thrilling day. For Cruising and Monohulls? Not a day for the less hearty. Well, there's always a late Sunday Brunch and creature comforts with no fear of getting wet!

Under reefed mains, the 12:00 start saw Minx cross the line firstA view of Chalong & Big Buddha from Minx
just seconds after hoisting her
foresail. To a surprised and elated crew, it was a sign that would agur well. However, others had plans of their own.

Katsu took the lead early in the game, pulling further and further ahead to complete not only the modified course of rounding Koh Bon and Koh Lon but also the additional two sausages that Course 7 dictates. A Swan flapping her wings and showing off? She gracefully finished her racing day before stragglers Nereida and MInx completed Sunday's assigned close!

The rounding of Koh Bon saw a spinnaker reach to Koh Lon with Minx vying to maintain her lead and Nereida striving to overtake. Tactics? Equipment stuff ups? "How are we going to get the thing down?" wondered Mick. The dilemma? A jammed spinnaker guy in the block. Fortunately a jury rig and some strong hands solved the kite calamity but with Nereida sailing clear, she was relegated to third place.

A rewarding sail for all followed by a rewarding afternoon at the club. Sunday also marked the end of an era as the club said goodbye to the effervescent and jocular Race Official and MC Tony Knight. Teary-eyed speeches and tributes to Tony's contributions to the club and to sailing in Phuket closed the prizegiving ceremonies. Cheers and all the best in your new endeavours, Tony. We'll miss you!
