Race 9 August 16 2009
Mother Nature played games with light and shifting winds throwing in some pockets of rain and then sunshine in Race 9 of the Ray Marine ACYC Race Series on Sunday. Five boats in three classes completed Course 1 and although a shortened course appeared to be the need early in the game, it was an ideal windward/leeward route that stuck for all boats to finish through the crafty conditions in the bay.
Race official Kathy de Cruz got the boats off in fine form with Charro crossing first down the line and with the strangling maids emerging in a close sequence around the start boat. Initially it appeared as if an inkling of closeness and fierce competition would ensue between Awatea and Minx. Was the flirtatious girl missing class competitor Windstar? Alas, Awatea luffed up and left 'em, sailing off on a course of her own in Cruising while Minx was left to tend to battle with Katsu for first in Racing.
Although Charro held the early lead towards the first mark,it was Katsu who was first around and held it to take line honours with a scattered fleet Katsu with her kite askewed
leaving little for battlefield action in the around-the-cans race. Otherwise spinnaker hoists - obviously intensely and cunningly planned - made for some excitement for the day. A wine bottle on The Frog suggested the beverage of the day and after the fact, an abashed skipper on Katsu hinted that with an overly ambitious hoist, that the kite and crew might have been heading to drink.
A sailor's delight after the cancellation of Race 8 in July due to the inclement weather? Hats off to the participants happy to be back out there.
