ACYC Club Sailing
Race Report 5 - Sunday October 16

ACYC Race 5, October 19, 2011
A view from Miss Saigon
What initially looked like a small crowd at the club turned in to being a BIG fleet of seven in Race 5 in the Irish Times Series. The multihulls outnumbered the monohulls by one! Participating monos were Linda, Dreamtime and Remington and with Multihulls it was Niña, Moto Inzi, Miss Saigon and Sidewinder out to spend a fine day.

Luck would have it once again (touch wood), a sunny day with what looked like a promising breeze.

The start was uneventful considering it was a mix of multihulls and monohulls with varying characteristics.

Sidewinder won the start and lead the fleet to the Baan Nit Safe Water Mark and onwards to the ever so hard to spot yellow buoy off the Rawai Mosque.

Lots of wind shifts and easing conditions made the day quite a struggle with no exceptions. Mid race confusion set in with Moto Inzi and Sidewinder not following the buoy rounding instructions “each mark was to be taken on port”.

This confusion mixed with the need for both cats to re-round the mark the correct way and re-pass the gate saw Miss Saigon gain ground and beat them both through the gate. Niña struggled at the back of the pack in winds that didn’t favour her weight and sail area – the crew still plodded on regardless – in fact Niña is the only multihull to have competed in every race of this series so far and all of the previous series.

The race went on with Moto Inzi overtaking Sidewinder and Miss Saigon scooting ahead for a clear first place both on handicap and line honours, Miss Saigon second across the line and second on handicap and Sidewinder third over and third on handicap.

The race was shortened for the monohulls with Remington ahead of Dreamtime and Linda bringing up the rear.

Everyone especially the Aussies were eager to get back to the club to watch Australia play New Zealand in the World Cup Rugby – they shouldn’t have rushed – a big loss 20-6. To drown there sorrows beers we aplenty and a good lot of Aussie Pies put on for the day by Lady Pie Susan, the race day sponsor. Overall series sponsors The Irish Times Pub prizes were given out to those that placed.

A varied repeat of the last Sunday club race two weeks back. Those you come win – three in each division so a prize for all!
