Race Report 1 - Sunday March 13
 |
| A clear Sunday sail for Miss Saigon |
Race 1 in the
Victron Energy Series saw a fleet of eight boats with crew keen and eager to get out and embrace the new season. Avid racers were back in full force with one even posting a charged message on his Facebook page: "First club race of the season today........yabbadabbadoo!!!! Let's go sailing!!!!!!". (Good one Kevin G!)
The day saw the members of three classes face both good and light winds in a shortened course which took them around islands in Ao Chalong to finish with a sausage.
The 12pm start saw the three boats in Racing and Miss Saigon from Multihulls away early with the race turning out to be a keen competition between the Racing fleet. A lowered mizzen on Emerald Blue at the start and later a self-admitted tactical error on Windstar may have served to provide the clean getaway for the raring crew on Minx who finished first.
In Cruising, good beginnings by Rusalka allowed her to take a commanding lead over classmates Chetak and Fidji and to follow closely on the tails of the Racing class. So captured was she with the fine sailing moments, she continued along the longer course until a telephone call alerted her to take the shorter route as required by Racing and Multihulls around Koh Lon. Alas, although good sportsmanship may have cost a first place for the boat placing the call, the banter and the beers at the end of the day certainly made up for it.
The red-shirted crew of Miss Saigon had a clean sail to finish first in Multihull while difficulties with a halyard plagued Niña causing her to finish last in the fleet.
