ACYC Club Sailing
Race Report 8 - Sunday July 10

ACYC Race 8, July 10, 2011
Moto Inzi, Minx and Babe off at the start!
It was a race day to be decided as well as a series to finalize in addition to a practice for some competing in the upcoming SEA Property Phuket Multihull Championship and Six Senses Phuket Raceweek regattas. In combination with winds blowing more than 15 knots, Race 8 of the Victron Energy Series made for an invigorating one.

The eight boats participating saw not only the strong winds, which kept crew on monohulls clambering for the high side and swelling seas at the southwest end of Phuket, which provided for a bumpy ride, strongly contributed to the exhilaration of the day.

The sequence to Race Officer Kathy de Cruz's 12pm start saw the fleet vying for ideal positions with a near crash and bang between Moto Inzi and newcomer to ACYC races, Dreamtime. An adrenaline rush (indeed!) with a nip and tuck allowed both boats to continue the race with the FireFly first off the line followed closely by Babe and Minx.

Moto Inzi led the fleet around the course and finished with line honours, but came second to Niña on corrected time. Ah, the joys of a performance handicapping system!

After an around-the-island race in Cruising, Chetak sailed a superb race finishing first with Iruvai coming in second.

The contest was to be held in Racing with Babe off the line first followed by Minx, Dreamtime and Linda. Would the placings hold true? Nope! Although Babe led the class around the islands and sausage course, damage to her foresail led her to bow out of the race. Linda did not follow the correct course towards the end of the race and was also eliminated from podium standings. The lightweighted father-daughter-duoed Minx of Kevin and Mia Gillow finished second with Dreamtime and her cast of gung ho captainS (editor's note) and crew, finishing first.
