Race Report 7 - Sunday June 6
Well, ACYC sailing fans, word has it that there was quite the action on the water in this race! As told to, as told to... Race 7 in the
Andaman Cabriolet Series sponsored by
ACYC tested the fortitude of the five boats participating in the action on and off the water. With 20 knots of wind blowing and with rain to come, from all accounts it was not a day for the faint-hearted. Yet!
One skipper with several boats at his disposal left the decision to race to his crew. In the eternal quest for the grail of grails, the impavid crew showed no fear of embracing the wrath of Mother Nature in their pursuit of Cloud Nine. With the prevailing conditions, a gentlemen's agreement was the order of the day with white sails to be hoisted only for the Racing Multihulls. For the sole Cruising Multihull, it was conditions to revel in.
Race Officer Scott Duncanson set the day's course and took to the water to officiate notwithstanding the gruelling conditions on the exposed longtail. A delayed start allowed Minx to join the race. Was Minx’s hesitation due to the inclement conditions? Our illustrious Commodore had been heard to remark pre-race about the Windguru predictions for the day which were borne out with a finish in 30 knots of wind. The delay proved fortuitous for Mathong who found herself ideally positioned right on the start line. Minx in her haste to the line encountered Mathong on starboard and bore away to pass behind her but did not allow herself sufficient room. Was Mathong surprised by her unique positioning at the front of the fleet and had she hesitated? Was our capricious lady aware of Windstar coming in fast to windward of Mathong also on starboard. Quick witted, Windstar tacked to avoid a further encounter of the wrong kind for Minx. And did Minx take her multiple penance as soon as opportune or did she pirouette once in leisurely fashion before going her flirtatious way?
Meanwhile, our intrepid grail chasers finding themselves without time pieces or any means of communication were keeping a vary eye out for signals emanating from the start boat. A veritable display of semaphore is how they referred to it but still they were none the wiser.
And as for Windstar! In their pre-start maneuverings apparently they were seen heading for a soft spot not dissimilar to that found by them in their previous outing. A judicious call from another boat was heeded with a response delivered in a deep southern US drawl, "Hey y'all! That's right. I've been there before." And appropriate action was taken. Quick witted!
In the absence of the usual sesquipedalian scribe, unfortunately no volunteers were found to write a timely report. Contributions to the race report are always welcomed. Although one wag was heard to remark that writing such reports is dead easy (Australian epithets cannot always be printed!) and offered to write the report. "Two words only, mate! That’s all that’s required!" His report – "Charro won!"
