ACYC Club Sailing
Race Report 9 - Sunday July 4

ACYC Race 9, July 4, 2010
MC Tim Willis getting into fine form!
With the quest for the podium and gentlemanly wager victories once again highlighting the day, Race 9 saw the end of well-fought races in the Andaman Cabriolet Series with the day's outing sponsored by ACYC.

Nine boats in the now four well-established classes ventured out in the light conditions to complete an around-the-cans course established by Race Officer Scott Duncanson.

Back from a month-long absence, Race Officer Kathy de Cruz got the fleet off on the downwind start at the appointed 12pm time. With spinnakers gracing the cloudy skies, it was Emerald Blue participating in her first race of the season, who crossed the line first. Was it superior tactics or the direction of a hot world sailing champion from behind the former Eastern Bloc to give pointers and direct the usually regular ACYC race sea salts to line honours and first place in Racing?

Meanwhile, the other four boats in Racing saw Babe, who the light winds favoured, coming in second - the usual position for her in ACYC races this season - with Minx in third and Simone in fourth in their worst placings of the series. In her second race of the series, Jenzminc came fifth. A lovely cruising boat, but you can’t help but the think the creature comforts of home avert a higher place performance. Perhaps the silent crew member, the washing machine, can be taught to self-tack, gimbal, wring the sheets…

In a race that showed a noted absence of Fireflys, only two boats in Racing Multihulls were in attendance to contest not only class victory of the day but to persevere the crusade of winning a slab of the revered Green Sandwiches, the essential Sunday racing food group. And with aluminum cans fully loaded and encased in rubber shields (note: protective apparatus against the heat and not against perceived incoming tactical onslaughts from threatening competitors) in clenched fist or within close proximity, the happy crew of Charro sailed a valiant race to receive... huh? no reward. Well, for the amber like-minded and followers of the Holy Grail trail, let it be known that the early lead Charro had over Niña was lost to a pre-meditated endeavour with the benefactor now the recipient of the precious elixir (never mind that by the end of the day the precious liquid was close to the boiling point in a black car!). Ah well, yawn? And a certain type of consumption series over? We'll see what the next one brings.

Despite a poor turnout of Racing Multihulls (remember prep work has started for the SEA Property International Phuket Multihull Championship and Six Senses Phuket Raceweek) Cruising Multihulls saw the presence of a Firefly skipper on board Mathong. Did Roger Kingdon assist in pushing Mathong to first as the only sole member in Cruising Multihulls? Perhaps not. But he was seen enjoying himself on the water doing foredeck on the Wharram Cat! No pressure before the calm before the upcoming regattas storm!

A hearty hats off to Andaman Cabriolet who sponsored the first series of the year and to the boats and crew who participated and congratulations to the winners and top placers in each of the classes. And the results? See ACYC AC SERIES Overall Positions.

Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC)Thanks to Scott Duncanson and Kathy de Cruz for plotting the Racing and Cruising courses and getting the fleet around them. Cheers and beers to ACYC for sponsoring the day and to the clubhouse crew for the cold beer, great buffet and their hospitality. And last but not least, y'all, a big hats off to Tim Willis for getting up on stage and delivering the drawl and race day awards in style.
