ACYC Club Sailing
Race Report 3 - Sunday April 4

ACYC Race 3, April 4, 2010
A view to Cats on the post-prowl
Seven boats participating in Race 3 in the Andaman Cabriolet Series sponsored by MyPhuketInfo.com saw some tension and last minute manouevres during the start sequence and provided the excitement for the day in an around-the-island course while fickle winds of varying strengths dictated the onboard tactics and crew positions.

Action before the start of the planned reverse Course 7 saw three multihulls vying for good positions and coming together for a sandwiched kiss with the FireFly Moto Inzi taking the fur off the bow resulting in a smear of her port side insignia. Were the outside sweeter and relatively unscaved crusts of the sandwich Typhoon and Niña on her windward and leeward sides respectively in the right? Or wrong? Yours to peruse the scenarios and be treated courtesy of the ISAF Rules of Sailing!

Meanwhile in other pre-race action, Minx left Nai Harn full steam ahead early in the morning with full intent to reach the Ao Chalong start in plenty of time. But as luck would, or wouldn't have it, the outboard engine on her dinghy was lacking a sheer pin. Quick and crafty thinking from the crew and a screw got them out to the boat. Inevitably thoughts from her fellow Racing class members Babe and Windstar dwelled on the "Hey, she's going to miss the start!" Alas (for her classmates), not only did she make the start, but she picked up two of her crew members from the start boat. A daunting rescue of the stranded man and maiden from the longtail? A clap of the hands and the flirtatious girl went on to win her class.

In the heat of the moment (temperature wise that is) crew scuttled for shade and undoubtedly some cold ones in the light winds as a procession around Koh Lon and Koh Bon was the rule of the day for Racing and Multihulls. Iruvai sailing solo in Cruising was fortunate to have an easy route, her course not requiring the southerly island, and finished in due fashion on a shortened course. Race Officer Kathy de Cruz finished all but one boat. Although Windstar had a good start positioned at the pin on starboard, she lagged behind the rest of the fleet eventually, um, spinning her prop and retiring after passing Ko Bon. Moral of the story? Her bottom needs to be spanked - and cleaned - before a race.

Shortened course? Was it due to the winds that the Racing Official of the day Roger Kingdon called an early quits? At least there was a brand new big screen TV showing the Easter Grand Prix on when crews reached shore!
