ACYC Club Sailing
Race Report 4 - Sunday April 18

ACYC Race 4, April 18, 2010
Oh boy! It ain't over 'til...
A preamble to the Phuket Multihull Challenge, a friendly wager on the water, spinning and twisted kites and fickle winds with a changing tide provided both some serious heads up competition and also laughs in Race 4 in the Andaman Cabriolet Series sponsored by ACYC.

The around-the-islands course, the reverse of Course 7, saw eight multihulls monopolising the day (a mission to start practising for the multihull regatta in July?) and two monohulls out for some fun and flops on Sunday.

The looooong start line between Onyx and the safe water mark saw the organised chaos of boats vying for position during Race Officer Kathy De Cruz's countdown sequence. With the P-flag about to disappear, most of the fleet had positioned themselves on starboard tack with the abundance of multihulls lined up in procession at the pin end while the monohulls chose a line closer to the start boat. Daring FireFlys, finding a gap between the other catamarans and the one triamaran, Miss Saigon, chose to start on port with The Frog quickly hopping over the line much to the surprise of others having sights askance as to what was beyond the line. Moto Inzi soon found her opening and tacked following The Frog and others on starboard. Meanwhile Babe and Minx, the only two monohulls, battled it out with Babe taking a quick lead.

Alas, for others, things don’t always go according to plan. Although Babe looked as if she had her cat in the bag, the final downwind leg provided a long stretch of difficulties with her spinnaker causing her to bear off losing time and distance. For Minx, however, it was a cool sail to the finish. Mathong sailed valiantly showing considerable improvement in speed and tactics on previous outings but alas conditions did not altogether suit her so she retired gracefully.
